DOR-MIAT and Embassy of Palestine Join Hands to Strengthen Humanitarian Medical Aid for Gaza
Hyderabad / New Delhi, July 7, 2026 — In one of the clearest signs yet of growing India-based support for Palestine’s health sector, Doctors of Rahman-Midland International Aid Trust (DOR-MIAT) has agreed to build a long-term humanitarian and medical partnership with the Embassy of the State of Palestine. The agreement was reached on July 6 in New Delhi, at a meeting between a DOR-MIAT delegation led by founder Dr. Yusufuddin Sheikh (London) and His Excellency Abdullah Mohammed Abu Shawesh, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to India.
A Delegation of Specialists
Dr. Sheikh was accompanied by a team reflecting the breadth of DOR-MIAT’s medical and logistical expertise: Dr. Imad, a surgical oncologist; Dr. Abid Hussain, an orthopaedic surgeon; Dr. Mubashir, a medical specialist; Mr. Adil Khan, Managing Partner of AN International (Customs, Cargo Clearing & Forwarding); Dr. Syed Fazal Hussain Parvez, Chief Editor of the Gawah Urdu Weekly in Hyderabad; and Mr. Ali Khan, AN International’s logistics partner. The inclusion of both clinicians and logistics specialists underlines DOR-MIAT’s intent to move beyond one-off donations toward a sustained supply chain for medical aid.
Ambassador Abu Shawesh welcomed the delegation and thanked them for their solidarity with the Palestinian people and their commitment to humanitarian service.
Briefing the Public
The following day, July 7, DOR-MIAT representatives held a press conference at Media Plus Auditorium in Hyderabad to share details of the meeting and outline their plans going forward. Dr. Iftikharuddin, Secretary of the Muslim Educational Social & Cultural Organisation (MESCO), was also present at the briefing.
Dr. Sheikh told journalists that the Ambassador had described the situation in Gaza as one of the gravest humanitarian crises facing the world today. The Embassy, he explained, represents not only Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, but also refugee communities in Lebanon and Syria, all of whom are affected by the collapse of local healthcare infrastructure.
The Ambassador also briefed the delegation on an appeal the Embassy issued on June 19, 2026, calling on the Government of India and the Indian public to help supply medicines and medical equipment for Palestine’s healthcare system. According to Dr. Sheikh, that appeal has already drawn a positive response from the Indian government, Indian companies, hospitals, and medical professionals, and arrangements to dispatch the first consignments of aid are now underway.
The scale of the need remains severe. Hospitals in Gaza and the West Bank are operating with only a fraction of their normal capacity, and there are dangerous shortages of essential medicines (including drugs for cancer treatment, anaesthesia, pain management, glaucoma, and severe malnutrition) alongside a lack of basic medical equipment for emergency and surgical care.
Firsthand Experience Driving the Mission
Dr. Sheikh’s commitment to this cause is personal as well as professional. He recalled his own humanitarian mission to Gaza in 2024, during which he performed numerous surgical operations under extremely difficult conditions, working through severe shortages of medicine and equipment. That experience, he said, was the catalyst for DOR-MIAT’s decision to launch a comprehensive humanitarian medical assistance programme dedicated to Palestine. As he put it at the press conference, the mission is about “not only medicines, but sustained hope.”
What Was Agreed
The meeting produced several concrete commitments:
- MoU nearing completion: A Memorandum of Understanding between the Embassy of Palestine and DOR-MIAT is in the final stage of legal review and is expected to be signed shortly. Once signed, it will formalize the framework for procuring and dispatching medicines, medical equipment, and other humanitarian aid from India to Palestine.
- First shipment on the way: Following the MoU’s signing, DOR-MIAT will dispatch its first consignment of humanitarian medical aid, with further shipments to follow on an ongoing basis.
- Clinical training for Palestinian students: Dr. Sheikh proposed offering clinical training placements for Palestinian medical students at leading hospitals in Hyderabad, to help strengthen the next generation of Palestinian doctors. The Ambassador welcomed the idea, suggesting that if students from Gaza are unable to travel because of the current situation, eligible students from the West Bank could take part in the meantime. The two sides agreed that the Embassy would coordinate with the Palestinian Ministry of Health to nominate candidates, while DOR-MIAT would prepare a detailed concept note for the training programme.
- Broader institutional partnerships: The Ambassador encouraged DOR-MIAT to build working relationships with major international organizations — including the World Health Organization (WHO), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Save the Children, and the World Food Programme (WFP) — as well as pharmaceutical suppliers already active in Palestine, so that future aid can be matched directly to needs identified by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
- Ongoing coordination: Both sides agreed to maintain continuous coordination on the logistics and transportation of relief supplies as the partnership develops.
